A professional artist friend in New York compared my early work to Pierre Bonnard and I immediately researched him and loved his paintings of the bath — it being one of my favorite places. In this painting, one of my first to use oils, the misty illuminated “glass block” walls are Bonnard's. I added my own bird's-eye perspective, the claw-foot tub, and of course, put one of my giant roses on the wall. Recently I was able to see a Bonnard exhibit in San Francisco and was excited that he left canvas showing on almost every piece! Being self taught, my doing this had always felt like a flaw. His exhibit was a great reminder that there are no rules.
